NEWS – Unveiling Pre-conference Workshops #5 and #7

On 17 June 2019 we offer nine highly informative Pre-conference workshops. Are you coming to Leiden a day ahead of the conference? Here is your second guide to two of the full set of workshops.

 #5 Pre-conference Workshop: The European Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Care - a Lens for Reflecting Systemically on Quality at Local and National Level
Offered by Bureau Mutant, the European Quality Framework Expert Group (The Netherlands) & VBJK (Belgium)

Objectives
This workshop will focus on the European Quality Framework (EQF), on the training package ‘5 Steps to Quality’ and on the implementation of the EQF in several countries. More specifically, the aims of this pre-conference workshop are:

  • To provide knowledge on the vision and content of the European Quality Framework;
  • To offer knowledge and tools of the 5 Steps to Quality Training to support child care managers and professionals in their efforts to improve quality;
  • To facilitate discussions and reflection through peer learning and reaching a deeper understanding of the themes in the Quality Framework;
  • To learn from other countries’ experiences with the implementation of the European Quality Framework in their own context.

The theme
The European Quality Framework has been developed by a group of experts, government officials, and policy advisors. It offers the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) field relevant instruments to reflect upon and enhance existing quality frameworks and/or systems. They can also ‘translate’ the EQF content into their own practice and context. The EQF’s holistic approach to quality is based on five themes: accessibility, workforce, curriculum, monitoring and evaluation, and governance and finance. Based on the framework, a practical 5 Steps to Quality training has been developed, handing to participants the must-haves and highlights of the European Quality Framework: the Framework as a lens for reflecting systemically on quality at local and national level.

Presenters
Anke van Keulen (Bureau Mutant), Ana del Barrio Saiz (Ana del Barrio Training& Consulting), Josette Hoex (NJI) from The Netherlands, and Hester Hulpia (VBJK) from Belgium.

#7 Pre-conference Workshop: From Hard-to-Reach Families to Easy-to-Reach Services
Offered by ICDI - International Childhood Development Initiatives & JES Rijnland (the Netherlands)

Objectives
The workshop facilitates shared learning and exchange on note-worthy practices when working positively and respectfully with ‘hard to reach’ families and communities, with the ultimate goal to support child development and well-being.

The focus is on two pioneering approaches to working with families with young children who may be marginalized. These are: firstly, the award-winning TOY for Inclusion approach, which is designed to address educational segregation and social exclusion of young children and their families (especially those with a minority or migrant background) in seven European countries, and secondly, the approach developed by JES Rijnland, in cooperation with Leiden Public Health Service to support families with young children in the Leiden region who face challenges in thriving or feeling ‘at home’ in ECEC and school services.

The theme
The theme of this workshop was chosen in order to highlight practices and approaches in community-based non-formal Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) that have proven effective in: building bridges between families and ECEC services; building trust between families of different backgrounds; supporting interaction and learning across all generations including older adults in the community; providing a community space for inter-agency cooperation between early years services.

Presenters
During interactives sessions, there will be presentations by Giulia Cortellesi and Margaret Kernan of the International Child Development Initiatives, coordinator TOY for Inclusion (www.toy4inclusion.eu). Co presenting are Nicoline Hoos from JES Rijnland, Marianne Bontje from public health service GGD Leiden. All presenting organizations are from the Netherlands.
