My Step by Step class was more like a playground

Step by Step (SbS) program alumnus Lazar Jovanovic (24) will soon obtain his Master’s degree in engineering, in Serbia. He says that the SbS program helped him to achieve good results in his studies and in his work later in life.

Lazar, why did you study in a Step by Step school and how was it different from others?
My parents were very hesitant when they had to decide between a class that followed the Step by Step program and any other. It was the first year of the program in Serbia and there was little knowledge about it. My parents were not sure if it would be beneficial for me, but in the end they did not regret their choice. Neither did I. I enrolled the program for four years, from the first to the fourth grade. My class was different because it did not feel like a regular classroom but more like a playground. We would acquire all the knowledge in a way that was more appropriate for the kids of my age. We had several centers – tables – where we had our classes. Each center was for a different subject. While studying, I was often playing and learning throughout the process, with games. I did not have "classic lessons": the process of learning was more interactive. Besides, our teachers did not give us grades during the first year. They gave us stickers which indicated our success, and for us, kids, this was less stressful.

What was the main lesson you learnt?
I learned how to share and I also acquired good teamwork skills. We would always work in groups, so we learned how to work together in a team. We had less pressure than in the regular classroom because we just played and did not feel “the pain” of the learning process.

How did the SbS program contribute to your growth?
In general, I would say that me and my friends from the SbS program succeeded more than the kids who did not have any experience with the program. During these first years I built the grounds to later become a good professional. It was in my school where I learnt about ethics at work. The positive atmosphere during the program helped me to look more positive on life. Because I was curious and eager to get new knowledge, I managed to finish college without any problems and got a good job. Now I am finishing my post-graduate education.

What would you wish the SbS program?
I wish that more children could have the opportunity to participate in the SbS program: it really makes you a better person.
